Use this checklist as a prompt every time you commence a weight-loss month. If you are convinced that you are successfully putting all of these strategies into practice and you still don’t see the weight budging on the scales, don’t be alarmed. The last thing you should do is reduce your food intake thinking that is the cause of your problems. Often it is the opposite, and you may actually need to focus on increasing the amount of wholesome and nutritious food you eat (see the list in Chapter 7). This is as long as you are keeping the less nutritious white, refined sources of carbohydrate (including all those foods we think are healthy, like muffins and banana bread) to an intake of once per week.

I would suggest making use of a food journal for at least a month to make sure you are keeping the ‘treats’ to a minimum, that you are having five meals per day, that you are substituting many of your meat-based meals with legumes or eggs as the protein source, and that you are focusing the majority of your food intake at the start of the day. Pay particular attention to monitoring afternoon and evening snacks. You might find that you are still subconsciously eating after dinner when you are not even hungry. Worse still, it may not be the healthy foods that you are advised to snack on (see Chapter 7).
